Kitchen tools… my favorite thing ever!
There’s something exhilarating about being in a kitchen store. All the utensils, tools, small appliances, pots and pans, blenders, and knives get me really excited. Cooking, especially healthy cooking, is much easier when you have the right equipment.
I’m not talking about anything fancy, but having the right tools will make healthy cooking easier while also saving you tons of time and stress in the kitchen.
As a personal chef, I know first hand how important the proper tools are for efficient healthy cooking.
These are my top 10 kitchen tools that I can’t live without (in no particular order):
High quality Chef’s knife:
Chopping, dicing, slicing, and more! Having a sharp knife will make all the difference in the world. A dull knife is actually more dangerous than a sharp one – crazy, right? Healthy cooking uses lots of fresh fruits and veggies. When you don’t have a good knife to chop with, it can make cooking seem like a daunting and frustrating task. Chop this, mince this, slice this… a good knife goes a LONG way. I recommend investing in a high quality knife this this one and take good care of it and it will last years! My favorite is Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Knife – it’s durable and comfortable to use.
Lemon squeezer:
Lemon squeezers are everything! It’s the first thing I use in the morning. Lemon water is so much easier when you aren’t trying to catch all the seeds with your hands. This is also wonderful for making homemade salad dressings and sauces, which I highly recommend. This tool is only a handful of dollars and totally worth every penny – grab the one I use here.
Microplane:
Say goodbye to garlic fingers! With all the cooking I do, I was sick of having fingers that smelled like garlic for hours after I was done cooking. This microplane makes mincing garlic a breeze. It’s also very helpful for grated ginger and turmeric and zesting citrus. You can use it for grating cheese also. It’s a very handy tool that I will never live without! I recommend this microplane.
Large cutting board:
Space. It’s the one thing everyone needs when they’re cooking. Haven’t you ever tried to chop multiple things on a tiny cutting board? It doesn’t work and you end up spending so much time and dirtying extra dishes to set aside your chopped veggies. A big cutting board is essential to efficient cooking. When I meal prep for myself and for my clients, a big cutting board is always on the counter so I can chop multiple things at once. I love this cutting board by OXO because it has grips on the bottom so it stays in place while you’re chopping. With a 14.5″ x 21″ working space, you can chop just about anything!
Spiralizer:
I love spiralizers! Making noodles out of vegetables is genius. I use this spiral slicer to make all kinds of different vegetable noodles for many of my clients as well as myself. Carrots, sweet potato, zucchini, beets… you can make any noodle you want! It’s easy to use and easy to clean. I love making zucchini noodles and serving it with my Basil-Jalapeno Pesto. This is a must-have for a healthy kitchen!
Food processor:
Food processors are definitely a must in a healthy kitchen. It’s great for making salsa, pesto, and homemade nut butters, among other things! I love making my Shredded Veggie Salad with this food processor by Cuisinart . You can also make my Chia Date Energy Balls in a food processor. The possibilities with food processors are endless – it’s something everyone should invest in for healthy cooking.
Colander/Strainer:
This is a life-saver for washing produce. Whether it’s fresh berries, lettuce, or straining pastas, a colander/strainer is SO helpful. I’m picky about which kind I use. Shape is important! A large rounded colander with a flat bottom makes your life easy in the kitchen.
High-Powered Blender:
There are no words to describe a good blender except AMAZING. There are a few good blenders out there, but the Vitamix is my favorite. It pulverizes anything you put in it to make a perfectly smooth and delicious smoothie. I also use it to make pureed soups, homemade nut butters, and hummus! The Vitamix comes with a lifetime warranty, so although it’s an investment up front, you definitely get your money’s worth! I can’t imagine my life without a Vitamix. It’s the one small appliance every healthy kitchen must have!
Ball Whisk:
This isn’t your average whisk. It’s a BALL WHISK – the best whisk ever! I have not lived until I found this whisk. Forget the rounded big whisks, this ball whisk mixes and stirs anything you need to perfection. It sounds weird that I could talk so highly about a whisk, but until you’ve tried it for yourself, you’ll never know the magic. With all the homemade salad dressings I make, a ball whisk is definitely the way to go. Ball whisks are hard to find in stores, but you can order one here.
Mason jars:
Oh, mason jars, how I love thee. The do-it all, store-it all container that’s been around for ages. I use mason jars for drinking glasses, mixing up dressings, freezing smoothies, preserving, storing dried goods, even as a makeup brush holder on my vanity! They are amazing for just about anything. I love the pint and a half sized wide mouth mason jars. They seem to be what I use the most! Start your collection now, you can never have too many mason jars 🙂
I use these tools almost every day whether I’m at home doing meal prep for myself or at a client’s house prepping their meals. Although I shared 10 kitchen tools with you, there are endless others that I use on the daily as well. From juicers, to basket steamers, to slow cookers, a healthy kitchen can never have too many gadgets.
