Have you ever skipped a meal before?
If you have, you’re not alone. Many people I have come into contact with that are trying to lose weight will skip breakfast or lunch because they think fewer calories = less weight. It’s a logical assumption, but it’s a flawed assumption because our bodies don’t work like that.
If you are trying to boost your metabolism and shed fat, skipping meals is your downfall.
Think about a car… if you want it to run properly, you need to put gas in it. When a car runs out of gas, it stops running. That’s how food works with your body. Food = fuel. If it doesn’t get any food, it won’t work efficiently. And not only will the body not function properly, but it also goes into survival mode.
What I mean by survival mode is this: when you don’t eat, your body thinks you won’t get food again, so when you do, it hangs onto that food, stores it as fat like a bear hibernates in the winter.
Not only will your body store fat, but also when you skip meals, your metabolism starts moving like a snail. It slows down to preserve as much of that fuel as possible. It’s important to eat at least 3 meals a day with snacks in between. The more your metabolism has to work, the more efficient it will work.
You can train your metabolism like you train a muscle. Build it up to be strong and efficient, or deal with the “use it or lose it” truth.
Check out this scenario:
There are two people: Person A and Person B.
Person A skips breakfast and lunch, but still eats their recommended 1500 calories for that day.
Person B eats 1500 calories also, but spreads those out among the 3 meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
What happens?
Person A gains fat around their waistline while Person B maintains a steady weight even though they ate the same amount of calories as Person A.
Calories aren’t what are important here, but WHEN those calories are consumed is what’s important.
Don’t be Person A. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner – even snacks too!
And another thing, don’t restrict your calories! Restricting your calories, or not eating enough food, has the same impact as skipping meals. Your body needs sufficient fuel.
How do you find the time to eat a nutritious meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
It’s hard, I know.
