Once I started to realize just how many toxins are found in hygiene and beauty products, I decided to start taking control of what I can. I am not quite to the point of making my own deodorant yet (that’s a stretch!) but I did decide to make my own toothpaste. Chemicals like fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, and propylene glycol are found in most store bought toothpastes. These chemicals disrupt hormones, act as carcinogens in the body, and have negative effects on brain tissue.
A few years ago I switched to fluoride-free toothpaste from Whole Foods but still noticed it contained sodium lauryl sulfate. I’ll have to admit, I was a little hesitant to ditch my regular toothpaste because I thought there was no way that homemade toothpaste could make my teeth feel shiny and clean. Boy, was I wrong! My DIY toothpaste is far superior to any toothpaste I have ever purchased in a store. Although it doesn’t have the ‘foamy’ element to it, this toothpaste leaves the mouth feeling sparkly clean. It takes a few days to get used to it, but once you do, you will never go back to the old stuff 🙂
The recipe for DIY toothpaste is simple and easy. It only takes 4 ingredients: coconut oil, baking soda, peppermint oil, and stevia! How awesome is that? Ingredients straight from the kitchen can be used to make toothpaste. I store my toothpaste in a mason jar and just scoop it out as I need it, but you can purchase empty tubes to fill and dispense like traditional toothpaste if you’d like.
Are you ready for the recipe?
Here it is!
- ½ cup coconut oil
- 5 Tablespoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons peppermint oil
- 1 teaspoon alcohol-free liquid stevia
- Melt down the coconut oil so you can easily incorporate all the ingredients. After the ingredients are mixed, I pop my toothpaste in the fridge for about 10 minutes to solidify the coconut oil again. The toothpaste can be stored at room temperature.
I highly encourage you to give this recipe a try and see what you think. I have no doubt that you will be joining the DIY toothpaste fan club soon enough 🙂
With joy and health,
