Do you ever feel like your body is retaining water?
Fluid retention can happen for many reasons. A few of them being PMS, thyroid disease, pregnancy, medications, high-sodium diets, toxicity, physical inactivity, kidney problems, and heart failure. Our body is always in survival mode. If the body feels that holding onto water is necessary, it will do just that. Water is retained in the circulatory system, body tissues, and cavities.
I remember the worst fluid retention I experienced was in the ICU back in 2010 when I was hospitalized for Toxic Shock Syndrome. You can read about my TSS journey here.
But to make a long story short, I was in a sepsis condition so the doctors were pumping me full of fluids to get my blood pressure up. Since my organs weren’t functioning at an optimum level, my kidneys weren’t excreting the excess water. Because of cause and effect, my body was beginning to drown in the fluids due to my lungs filling up with water. I was put on high levels of oxygen to continue breathing and I was also given a strong diuretic to flush out the fluids. Luckily, the diuretic worked fast enough that I didn’t have to have a tracheotomy.
Now that’s clearly an extreme case, but even the smallest things can cause our body to retain water. Like I mentioned before, water retention can be a symptom of eating processed, salty foods or high-sodium diets. That fact alone is a high percentage of Americans.
With all that being said, it’s very important to make sure we are keeping our kidneys filtering toxins and excreting excess water through the urinary tract. I decided to make a juice that will have a similar effect as diuretic medications you can get over-the-counter.
All the ingredients have a diuretic effect on the body. Celery, cucumbers, asparagus, and lime work together to dissolve and eliminate toxins while also hydrating the body.
Like I always say, let food be your medicine! This juice is exactly that.
- 1 bunch organic celery
- 1 large organic cucumber or 4 organic Persian cucumbers
- 8 stalks organic asparagus
- 1 organic lime
- Thoroughly wash all vegetables.
- Juice vegetables in a juicer and drink immediately.
- Be sure to follow the juice with a glass of water.
With joy and health,

This is very interesting!! Do you think water retention is likely with too much himalayan sea salt intake as well?

Hi Chassie! Great question…
Good news for us, Himalayan salt will not cause water retention because it has all the minerals in tact. In regards to water retention, I’m referring to white table salt that is pure sodium. The high levels of sodium causes an imbalance of minerals in the body which leads to the body retaining water.
