Raise your hand if you’ve ever set New Year’s resolutions.
Me too.
Now raise your hand if you’ve ended a year with your resolutions still in the back of your mind because you just didn’t have the time or energy to get to it that year.
Me too.
After a couple years of feeling disappointed in myself for failing to achieve my New Year’s resolutions, I decided to stop making them.
I don’t know who came up with it, but the idea of a resolution is flawed to begin with. When the clock strikes midnight and the calendar flips from December to January, we assume that we have changed also. Like one minute from 11:59pm to 12 midnight is going to make us a different person. Well I hate to break it to you, but it won’t.
Our habits and personalities don’t change overnight. We can’t go from couch potato to body builder just because it’s January 1st. Over and over I see people set resolutions that are simply far fetched. What we should be doing is setting small achievable goals planned throughout the year. For example, if you’re overweight and can’t seem to get off the couch on the weekends, try a goal that you only spend 5 hours per weekend watching TV. That’s achievable and something you can measure. When those 5 hours are up, you’re off the couch and doing something. Even if it’s doing the laundry, at least you aren’t sitting in front of the tube.
Another example of New Year’s resolutions would be in regards to diet (my favorite). I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the resolution, “I want to lose weight this year and get my body back”. What does that mean? And how are you going to do that? Small steps my friend. If you set small, achievable goals, you can build on them to develop health as a lifestyle rather than a temporary diet. Here’s an example…
- January: increase my water intake to 100 ounces per day and reduce my daily Starbucks drink to only 2x/week
- February: add one serving of leafy greens to my daily meals
- March: stop eating the candy in the break room at work and bring healthy trail mix to snack on instead
Do you catch my drift? It’s not only about WHAT you want but HOW you’re going to achieve it.
Dream big, of course; but don’t just imagine it, work towards it! Action is required and necessary. Your body won’t just shed fat for you; you have to eat the right foods. Your stamina won’t magically increase; you have to get your heart rate up daily. Your business won’t run itself, you have to get up every morning and work like a dog to make it happen. It’s all about action.
So, my friend, what are you going to do to make your dreams happen? What do you really want in the New Year?
I encourage you to do something different this year. Instead of resolutions, think about goals and focus on the daily, weekly, and monthly goals rather than yearly. Because those days, weeks, and months are what make up the year!
